Drive-Time Discipleship

thOver the past several months I’ve been teaching my youngest two children Bible verses. Why not the oldest child, too, you ask? Well, I drive the youngest ones to school, and my hubby drives the oldest, and I’ve chosen to use our drive-time to chat about the verses.  So, it looks like the hubster is going to have to step it up to keep up with me in the parenting/discipleship department. You can check out what we’ve been doing in this post and this post.

We’ve added some new verses to the mix, and I wanted to share them with you. Join the fun and teach your kids….or learn them for yourself! Hiding God’s Word in our hearts helps us avoid sin that so easily entangles us in this life. Check out the latest verses on our list:

Hebrews 11:1 Faith is being sure of what we hope for. It is being certain of what we do not see.

Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer will calm a person’s anger, but an unkind answer will cause more anger.

Psalm 77:14 You are the God who performs miracles. You display Your power throughout the nations.

Remember, memorizing Scripture isn’t only about rote memory. It’s also about understanding context and meaning….about practically applying those truths to our lives and attitudes.

A great way to spend time with God is to simply meditate on (think or ponder) a few verses and then write out your thoughts. For instance, meditating on Proverbs 15:1 might allow God to point out a few areas of our lives in which we could use kinder words or a more gentle approach. Or, meditating on Psalm 77:14 might inspire us to list the many ways God has provided for us individually or how He has revealed Himself in the world….leading us to praise Him with a more thankful heart.

Do you have a favorite verse that you’ve committed to memory? What did you learn from it?
